Car stalls when I hit the brakes?

my car is a 1993 Pontiac Grand prix. If I keep my foot on the brake and try to start the car the engine will start but almost as soon as I take my foot off the brake the car will stall when I put it into gear. Its not something that happens all the time. My car has ABS and when I realize my foot from the brake their will be like a plastic sound coming from the booster but it will only happen if I start the car with my foot on the brake and when I take my foot off the brake it will make that plastic sound. The ABS will also make that sound if the system is activated. The engine has 179K miles on it but it has new gaskets in the upper intake all new vacuum lines and I also replaced the plugs with Platinum plugs. the car had this problem before I changed anything. I maintain the car like a new car so even with 179k the car still looks new even up close it also runs and drives great but the only problem I have is with it stalling sometimes. the booster holds vacuum and my brakes are responsive and they don't fade or anything. I don't have any ABS lights or check engine lights I checked all my fuses and they are good the ABS system it self works fine as I test it every now and then if I am driving on a wet road. the engine can pull 20 pounds of vacuum at idle and almost 32 at speed.
Car stalls when I hit the brakes?
the brake booster is one cause but the transmission is another. the torque converter is a lock up type and if this is your problem then the control solenoid or the circuit to that is at fault.
Car stalls when I hit the brakes?
the brake booster leaking or bad
You say your booster makes a plastic sound but I don't know what a plastic sound sounds like. When you start your car with your foot on the brake, if the booster is OK the pedal should sink towards the floor slightly. If it doesn't, the booster has a leaky diaphragm which just might be what's causing your problem..
If it's not your booster that has gone bad, try checking your throttle body's idle. When you place a car in drive it places a bit more of a load on the engine. If your idle is too low, this may be too much for the engine and it will cuase it to stall. It's a simple fix. Just need a screwdriver. Hope this helps.

  • Apparently I need my car aligned. Would that cause a shaking/rattling noise in the front when I drive?

I went to get my front brakes changed recently and was told I needed an alignment badly and a new axle and tie rods on the front. Which of these things would cause the front of my car to shake when I'm driving fast on the freeway? And if I can't afford to do them all at once, which would be best to do first? Thanks!
Apparently I need my car aligned. Would that cause a shaking/rattling noise in the front when I drive?
Tire balance! The shaking is what killed your tie rods and ball joints in the first place.

If the shaking only happens during braking, it's your rotors.

Whatever it is get it fixed all at once, beg borrow steal whatever it takes. You will probably pay less in labor that way, and your saftey should be first priority.
Apparently I need my car aligned. Would that cause a shaking/rattling noise in the front when I drive?
probably all of it if u trust the place.

these problems can easily damage your tires n u don want to get new tires, do u
what year is your car, mileage and condition of it also, depending on the problem it may be time to just get a new car, i mean why keeping putting money into somethinig that may break down again in a fe months, my mom kept doing that with her car, i said mom u could be using that money as a down paymenht for something better. moral of this story is that she took my advice and now has a 07 chevy cobalt, she has had it for almost a year and has saved herself time and trouble.

if your car is fairly new, then maybe u want to invest in it, its all up to you!

Why do my Car Brakes Squeal?

Ok so I have a 2002 honda Civic Lx that I recently bought like about 4 months ago. When I bought it the brakes were perfectly fine, but I guess I was told that it needed new brakes. So my dad went to go change them for %26quot;new%26quot; brakes. Ever since, my front disk brakes began to squeal after a few times of braking when I'm driving (No I am not a reckless driver so I know how to drive and brake properly). My dad went back to see what's wrong and they told him that its just the kind of metal that is used on the brakes, that they make that noise but work perfectly fine.

So is it just the the kind of metal used for the disk or brake pad that's the reason for all this screeching or is it something else that I am not aware of?
Why do my Car Brakes Squeal?
Rock Star has it right. I use %26quot;Disc Brake Quiet%26quot;, in both a liquid application and a spray. you pull the pads, apply the stuff to the contact points on the pad (on the back - do not use it on the points where it touches the top of the caliper!), and reassemble.

The squealing is a vibration that occurs at the pad, and is transmitted up the caliper. The disc brake quiet acts as a vibration dampener to prevent the pad from chattering excessively.

Is it %26quot;the kind of metal%26quot;? Yes and no - certain types of pads that are designed to resist brake fade seem to have a tendency to develop a squeal, but from my experience, it can be a combination of the pad material, the rotor condition, and just plain luck.
Why do my Car Brakes Squeal?
at the counter of almost every auto parts store they have small 1 ounce tubes of %26quot;Squeal Stop%26quot;.

Place a little on the metal of the brake pad (Backs) reassemble

    By BY squeal
usually cuz there bad or because you have break dust. by brake dust cleaner and spray all of it and then drive to 60mph and slam on breaks. should be straight. or just get brakes inspected for free at any good brake shop.

When your car is shaking when you brake and u just changed the brake pads what do u need to do?

My car shakes when I brake and I just changed the brake pads about 6 months ago and I would like to know if I now need to change the rotors or there is something else I will need to do
When your car is shaking when you brake and u just changed the brake pads what do u need to do?
The rotors would be the first thing to check. It could be something else related to the brakes, given you don't get any shaking other than when you apply the brakes.
When your car is shaking when you brake and u just changed the brake pads what do u need to do?
sounds like you need to have the rotors turned (if they haven't been already) or you need new rotors.

sometimes pad slapping them (just putting pads on) ends up creating a rotor warp situation.

    sounds like that happened.

    good luck!

This just happened to me and I actually had to have them shaved down. They were warped. Might be your problem too. Have a mechanic check it out.
maybe shocks or rack and pinnion
your rotors are warped. depending on the thickness of the rotor, you will either have to resurface them or have them replaced. if you resurface them, you will make them thinner and they'll warp again sometime down the road. if you get them replaced, they will be thick again and won't warp for a while.

Is it bad to drive an automatic car the manual way?

My husband keeps driving my automatic car the manual way.He thinks he is saving gas and saving the brakes (I need to change the brakes but can't do it for at least another month) My car is not manual so I don't think it will save me any gas, but what about my brakes? Thank you!
Is it bad to drive an automatic car the manual way?
Heheheheh...my wife gets annoyed with me when I use the manu-matic in my Mazda (alliteration FTW) too.

Except I usually only use mine to save gas. It doesn't go into 6th by itself until it's above 42mph. If I'm doing 40 on fairly level ground I click it over to the manual gate and drop it to 6th.

The only time I shift down with it in normal driving is when I have been in the mountains on a long downhill section
Is it bad to drive an automatic car the manual way?
Well you can shift it from the low gear to higher ones but its better to leave it in drive for the transmission and if you down shift like that its real bad while your moving its not the same as a manual transmission the inside is different.
Brakes are a lot cheaper than transmissions. I don't recommend what he is doing except under certain circumstances, such as going downhill.
Yeah if anything it uses more gas, their higher the rpms the more fuel needs to be injected.. theirs nothing that saves fuel.. if you wanna save fuel stay light on the pedal..
I would say he is not saving gas, most likely using more. Modern automatic transmissions are pretty efficient and smart. Some can actually learn your driving style to make things more efficient. Shifting one manually will confuse it so even when you drive it would be as efficient as it could be. As long as he is not driving aggressively he is probably not hurting the transmission. He may be saving a little on the brakes but not enough to make it worth the trouble in typical city traffic.
    Bad? Maybe. Pointless? Absolutely.

Believe it or not your cars computer controlled transmission is smarter than your husband. It knows the perfect time to shift and will hit it with split-second precision. Make a mistake shifting manually and you could have a repair bill of several thousand dollars.
It's certainly not %26quot;bad%26quot; for the car, but I doubt he's saving much gas, if any.

If he's downshifting when he drives down steep hills, however, then, yes, it is giving the brakes a rest. In low gears, the wheels can only spin so quickly at a certain RPM, so by downshifting down hills you can delegate some of the braking to your engine instead of your brake pads. This safe driving technique is recommended for all long hills with all cars.
only on very steep hills would i downshift it that way other than that its a waste just wears out shifter parts and besides brakes around 150$ or trans 2000-3000$ unless he has money to burn tell him to knock it off its your car let him do it to his

How much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car's front brake pads?

I have already bought new break pads from someone, so I only should pay to have them changed. I live in Los Angeles by the way. Please give me an appoximate of what would be reasonable. I'm a student, low on cash.

    Thank you.
How much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car's front brake pads?
You did a no,no. It would be the same as bringing your own steak to the resturant and asking them to cook it for you. Never bring your parts to a mech and ask them to install them. Now you will pay around $75 to have them put on.
How much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car's front brake pads?
They should be able to do it in under an hour, but they will also charge you for shop supplies and will probably come up with some other things that they will try to charge you for, the rotors may need to be turned as well, if they are badly scored they may need to be replaced, I would borrow some tools if you don't have them already and do it yourself, it's an easy job and then you know you won't get screwed by some mechanic that is trying to charge you for work that doesn't need to be done.

Sorry if I offended any repair shops, I just don't trust them and do all of my own work unless it's under warranty.
Shop around. One guy may do it for a case of beer whereas another wants a million. That is free enterprize.
To do the job right the rotors need turned and the pads installed, Midas charges $79.95 for the job and thats about the cheapest around, it would be cheaper for you if you had a buddy who could do it for you and buy him a case of beer.
grab a friends tools and do it yourself,it's unbelievable to me that anyone ever gets a garage to do such simple jobs
First off it's really best to change the rotors when changing the pads unless the pads were evenly worn and how damaged at all. Also the rotors could be burnt or unevenly warn so it's best to have a mechanic perform a free brake check on that vehicle.

The labour really isn't any different in price if the pads and rotors are replaced at the same time and really it should be more then 45 mins to 1 hr of labour cost tops.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way I'd not say anything about changing the pads etc until you have the free test performed and hear from from the mechanic.
    I charge $25 per wheel + parts.
    Like $50 each wheel

  • When driving my automatic car; it sometimes slows down by itself as if I am changing gears. What's wrong?

I drive an automatic 2001 VW Golf GL. When on the road, my car sometimes does this thing where it feels like I am shifting gears (as if I were driving a stick shift) or driving on neutral (which I am not). It happens when I'm driving it, not when I'm in the process of braking. Does any one know what can be wrong with it? Thank you.
When driving my automatic car; it sometimes slows down by itself as if I am changing gears. What's wrong?
    Could be transmission gears slipping?

How bad is to change gear in automatic transmission when car is not in full stop?

when i go reverse, the digital meter of the civic 07 display 4mph. i step a little bit on the brake and the display change from 2 or 1mph then i change the gear to D. I do the same process from D to reverse. can i still do this? i dont like to feel the dry stop when changing automatic gears.

the case is not the same when changing to parking, i change to parking when car is full stop. just wondering, what happen if i leave the the D gear and turn off the car? is it going to affect any part of the car?
How bad is to change gear in automatic transmission when car is not in full stop?
yes it can do damage and severely shorten the life of the transmission. remember, there are gears with teeth inside that transmission, anytime you change from one to another while they are still moving you risk breaking one or more of those teeth, once you break enough, you lose that particular gear.

Not a good idea at all if you expect it to last
How bad is to change gear in automatic transmission when car is not in full stop?
most of those practices will result in a dramatic loss of transmission life over time.
A new transmission is a very expensive repair. If you think of your car as another appendage, you will treat it better. Stop, then shift.

I've just bought a Citroen xsara diesel and the car has developed a terrible judder on the brakes?

when i bought the car their wasnt a judder then just recently it became really bad its had new brake pads and new brake discs also we changed the tyres and it hasnt helped their isnt any slack in any ball joints or rubbers any where on the car. is there a common fault or is it just on mine. does anyone else have the same problem and how did they cure it?
I've just bought a Citroen xsara diesel and the car has developed a terrible judder on the brakes?
This is almost always due to runout on the brake rotors--they become warped from overheating. But since you say they're new, you might also check the lower control arm bushings.
I've just bought a Citroen xsara diesel and the car has developed a terrible judder on the brakes?
Check if the brake discs were replaced before, and make sure the replacements are originals. Also check the brake pads, they must be original or officially approved (Valeo, Citroen or Peugeot).

    Last, check the suspensions.

Is it hard to change the front brakes on a 90 Honda civic?

I bought this run around car and it needs new front brakes. Is it possible to change the front brakes myself? Or is it too hard? If it is possible how do I find out how to do it?

Thanks in advance for any answers:)
Is it hard to change the front brakes on a 90 Honda civic?
You could change your front brakes in about 30 minutes, it is a very simple procedure, and you can purchase a Haynes, or Chilton's repair manual for your particular car for about 20 bucks, my only advice is to buy the high grade brake pads, don't buy bargain brake pads or you'll find that they begin to fade very quickly on long downhill grades, if you don't know what fade means, it means when you push on the brake pedal and the pads get hot their stopping ability fades until they don't work at all, just buy quality pads and a repair manual and you'll do just fine.Hope this helps.

Is it hard to change the front brakes on a 90 Honda civic?
Front brakes are just about the easiest repair there is. If you have some basic hand tools, you can fix the brakes. You will save yourself some real money, and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.
No, it is super easy, but super easy to make a mistake and then have an accident which if traced to your home brake work will result in substantive legal action against you and all of your worldly possesions.

There are many things that can go wrong and many tolerances that must be measured that the home DIY person lacks the special tools and training to do. Your call but the risk is real.

Theoretically, can a car last a million miles with no major hardware replacements?

Aside from Oil/Filter, Fluid, Brake Pad/Tire changes; can a car go a million miles with no other mechanical replacements?
Theoretically, can a car last a million miles with no major hardware replacements?
A car has a lot of reciprocating parts. These major parts, engine, Transmission, wheel bearings and rear end, even though lubricated, constantly wear as they turn. This in turn leads to metal fatigue and failure of the parts. Even with the best of care, none of these will survive a million miles of wear. A lot of the cars you hear of that are still running with 200K to 400K miles have had one or more major components rebuilt or replaced. As to the Honda with a million miles and all 'original' parts I seriously doubt it. The designation, in the industry, of 'All original parts' merely means that they used the manufacturers parts when they repaired it. It doesn't necessarily mean it has the parts it left the factory with.
Theoretically, can a car last a million miles with no major hardware replacements?
No. It would never last that long. Your watching too much married with children
    NO.........................

I HAVE SEEN THEM GO UP TO 600,000 MILES BUT THE WEAR AND TEAR IS TO MUCH EVEN WITH ALL OF THE MAINTENANCE DONE ON THEM.
A car is a machine, anything can happen at anytime-that's why we have warranty cover for some period. It is not impossible, but all parts can age, some can age before 1million miles.

Repair shops will also have to close up if all cars hit 1m miles without any problem.

    Think about it.
yes it can if you drive very carefully
I believe it was done by someone in either Texas or California. If i remember correctly it was an early sixties dodge valiant with a slant six. Allmost all the original parts were on it except for the normal items that wear out. And I think the Chrysler reps documented it. The owner was a travelling salesman.
Not impossible, just not likely. I did however find a Honda Civic on Craig's List that had over a million miles and still ran just fine with all original parts.

  • Car brakes vibrating, clunking noise?

ok long story short. a month or two ago my 93 chevy corsica had some heavy brake grinding when driving below 30. checked the front pads, turned out the passenger side caliper seized and had no pad left. changed front diver and passenger pads and only front passenger caliper. when going for a test drive i noticed my brake petal was now vibrating hard with each stop and car was pulling to the left (opposite the side with the new caliper) while driving and a tiny bit when stopping. when it stops its very jerky like its getting tighers, then lets go a little, then tighens again and does this till i come to a stop. a week or two later i noticed extreme heat and smell comming from the side we changed the caliper on but i thought it was just the pads wearing in. now its a month or two later and the font passenger with the newer caliper has no pad and is begining to grind again. also theres a nice clunking noise comming from the rear driver side. what the hell is wrong with my car?
    Car brakes vibrating, clunking noise?
There could be a number of things. First of all your brake fluid could be bad. Brake fluid is hydroscopic and absorbs water. When there is too much water in the fluid it will begin to rust the insdies of your brake lines and the rust will settle in your calipers and seize or damage the cylinder in the caliper, causing them to stick. To change your fluid get a syringe or something to remove all the fluid that you can from the reservoir and then fill it with new fluid. Then open up your bleeders one each wheel and either try and pump through the fluid with the pedal or a bleeder vaccum. This is to push out all the fluid still in your lines. Make sure you keep your reservoir full and when you see the new fluid coming through your lines then your done. (The old fluid will be very cloudy and the new will be an amber color). Close up your lines after that and then bleed all your lines like normal. You will need to rebuild or replace your caliper(s) to ensure that they work right but only after you have flushed the new fluid through or else you will find yourself in the same situation as before. And you probably should also replace your rotors because that can cause vibrations in you petal when stopping. Especially since you had metal to metal grinding.

As for the rear does it clunk when you hit the brakes? If so then you need to adjust your rear brake pads. Assuming that they are drum brakes then open the inspection hole on the botom back side to reveal the adjuster turn it a litlle bit (it will only go one way) and then test it, repeat until the clunk goes away.
    Car brakes vibrating, clunking noise?
your caliper may have not been the original problem. replace both flexlines going to the calipers. if one has collapsed inside itself it would do the same thing as a stuck caliper. when you have finished this job and while the car is still up in the air have someone apply the brakes for you and when they are released, spin the tires to make sure that they spin freely. good luck

Do I really need to take my car to a shop to have the brake pads changed?

My husband has received a quote by a repair shop to replace the brake pads, plus the calipers and possibly rotating the disks, if necessary...of $250. I've changed my own brake pads before at a significantly less cost. I'm wondering, is it worth paying that much? The brakes are in good condition, I have a chevy malibu 2005. Should I just change them on my own?
Do I really need to take my car to a shop to have the brake pads changed?
On most modern cars, changing brake pads involves removing two bolts per caliper, swinging it out of the way, and replacing old pads with new.

Before you can put the caliper back over new pads, the piston needs to be pushed back in.

Assuming that pad replacement is all you need, you should just do it yourself.

Buy a Haynes manual for your car, you might need to get a tool to push the piston in, but it will be cheaper than the garage.

Read the whole procedure before you begin, make sure you have everything you need on hand, and save $200.

    Good luck
Do I really need to take my car to a shop to have the brake pads changed?
    Hi,

Get at it , your good to go!
Go do it yourself and save some money ! My husband does his when his need doing :o)
Why take it in when you can save the money.

The only time you really need to take it in is when the rotors need to be turned.
ok if you just need your pads and rotors changed thats easy enough to do on your own and can probably be done for $75.00 but the calipers need to be changed too? Why? Especially in a 05, that doesn't sound right to me. Anything you can do yourself will just save you money, so if you can do it, then go for it.

What is the pedal configuration in a manual car from Great Britan? Is it the same as North America?

I am going to England soon and will be renting a car. All of the rental cars are manual transmission. I have no problem with the manual part, what I would like to know, is the pedal configuration the same as here in Canada? Control gas and Brake with right foot, and control clutch with left. I ask this because you are driving on the right side of the car, changing gears with your left hand, just wondering if the pedals are backward too? Anyone who has ever driven in Great Britan please respond and let me know, it will take a load off my shoulders, and may help me prepare for driving in that country...if driving on the right side isn't confusing enough. Thanks!
What is the pedal configuration in a manual car from Great Britan? Is it the same as North America?
The pedal layout and gear positions are the same both sides of the Atlantic. Getting used to the layout of the car controls will be the first of the issues that you'll have to cope with.

I used to work at a large airport outside London and have seen some of the daft things that US drivers do as soon as they collect their hire cars. They seem to think that everything is same as %26quot;at home%26quot;. Please accept the following in the spirit of helpfulness...

A few things to note, or you may have %26quot;difficulties%26quot; when driving in the UK:

Get the terminology right (English is a slightly different language from American).

In the UK only very specially adapted cars run on 'gas'. Your fuel will be diesel or petrol (don't mix them up, it would be an expensive mistake). What you call the %26quot;gas pedal%26quot; is the %26quot;Accellerator%26quot;.

There are commonly two grades of petrol, their names vary by company: normal/regular/super and Premium. Unless you have a souped-up sporty car then don't waste your money on Premium.

Most car diesel is very much the same these days (low sulphur etc) regardless of what label the garage gives it. In some places you can buy bio-diesel if your car will take it and you're feeling %26quot;eco-friendly%26quot;.

As a general rule at roundabouts (and many other junctions) - unless signs indicate otherwise - you should give way to traffic approaching from your right (unless you're already on the major road).

Most garages are self-service and Petrol is sold in litres. It is very expensive (about 97pence/litre) so drive carefully or your fuel bills will be shockingly high. The further from London you are the cheaper it gets, unless you're in a very rural area. Don't buy it from a motorway service station because it's even more expensive. The cheapest places to refuel are in supermarkets.

People are generally tolerant at road junctions etc. but if you make a mistake and proceed as if you were driving on the right then people will not accept %26quot;US tourist%26quot; as an excuse when you bend their car.

At all times keep in the left lane on motorways unless you are overtaking. You'll see lots of idiots who think that they have a God given right to hog the centre lane. Don't be one of them, they cause jams and bad tempers.

Keep to speed limits at all times (as usual, you should ignore the idiots who think the rules don't apply to them). The UK is liberally covered with automatic cameras, which you won't see untill it's too late, and your car will be traced to you via your hire company. They'll have a nice collection of fines for you to pay.

Trains always have right of way at level crossings. There are not many of these in England but there do seem to be plenty of people who %26quot;play chicken%26quot; and usually lose. Bumping a train could affect your collision damage insurance.

Familiarise yourself with UK driving rules, road signs and terminology. Many are not the same as in the US (especially at junctions). To keep yourself out of trouble you should read the Highway Code BEFORE you come. It's not long and will save you a lot of grief. The link below should help you.

    Enjoy your stay.
What is the pedal configuration in a manual car from Great Britan? Is it the same as North America?
I haven't driven in Great Britain, but I have driven in Japan which also has right-hand drive cars. The gas is on the right, brake in the middle and clutch on the left just like you are used to with a left-hand drive car.

The hardest thing to get used to is looking to the right first when crossing an intersection (and when crossing the street when you are walking).
I am American and went to the UK in May. The pedals are the same as cars in North America - gas on the right, brake in the middle, clutch on the left. The gear shaft is also the same as cars in north America in that 1st gears is the upper left corner of the shaft, 2nd gear is the lower left corner, etc. But you will have to use the gear shaft with your left hand which is strange. You may bump the curb a few times since your perception of the width of the car will seem odd from the right side but you will get used to it. Driving on the left side of the road will be odd but you will get used to it. Just a note - Unless you are in a city, the roads in the UK are very confusing if you are from North America. They are very narrow and most are not labeled. My buddy and I drove around Somerset County and we were so lost even with a map. Both of us have a great sense of direction but the signs were either non-existent or came up so fast that you missed them. When we would ask people for directions, they didn't even know the names of the streets on the map - they would say,%26quot;Just drive up the road and take a left go to the third roundabout and take a right drive straight and take a left after that.%26quot; We were so lost and we just got more lost as the day went on. But it was an adventure. Just be sure to have the passenger navigating while you drive. You will need it. Have a great time : )

PS - Don't bring a car into London unless you are used to heavy city driving. My buddy and I are from NYC so we are used to it but if you aren't, park the car out of town and take the train into the city center.
You should be able to get an automatic if you ask for it in advance. However, the pedals are exactly the same, gas/throttle/accelerator on the right, brake in the middle and clutch on the left. I'd agree with The Tank, and have a look at the Highway Code he recommends. Remember roundabouts work clockwise and you give way to traffic from the right on these (usually). And if you dodge around the barriers on a level crossing you'll be explaining yourself to a higher authority that the police!
yes, just the same, its surprisingly easy, i drive on right in France regularly, the only thing is when youv'e had a break leave a note on the wheel to say drive on the %26quot;right%26quot; to remind you, once your'e going its no problem, don't worry , enjoy, the thing that will amaze you over here is the speed and overtaking- good luck
    Yes.!!!
The pedal layout is the same in the UK as the US / europe.

And the gear stick layout is the same - reverse position may vary if its 5 or 6 speed.

You should be able to get an automatic car to hire though...
Our cars are powered by engines in Britain, only our bicycles have pedals!
you have got it from GB
exactly the same.all cars over here are right hand drive though so should be taken into consideration.most hire companies have automatic cars so insist or try another.welcome to britain.

    Changing Car light bulb?

Recently replaced left rear bulb for brake light in Mondeo and it worked. However, just noticed that both dipped lights not working and front right head light.

Is it likely that I have caused the problem when changing other bulbs or is it likely to be a simple case of a lot of bulbs going at the same time.
    Changing Car light bulb?
    It's coincidence.
    Changing Car light bulb?
its just all ur light goin bad just replace them all..
Please check fuses first, and make sure you put the right bulb in the light you replaced.is it a single pole or double, you can see by looking in the socket, if there are one or two contacts inside the socket, make sure your bulb has the same amount of contacts.
Its possible that you have put a single element bulb in as the brake bulb instead of a double element type. Check the bulb, it should have 2 solder type points at the base and you should be able to see 2 thin element wires inside the glass. Also sometimes fuses can be blown when you change bulbs on the Mondeo. Check the fuses, if you have never changed them before there should be spare fuses clipped to the side of the fuse board.

Cost to change brakes on 2001 Grand Am?

My dad bought me this car in november and the brakes are REALLY squeaky! How much will it cost and is there anywhere that i can go that will do it cheaper than the local pontiac dealership?
Cost to change brakes on 2001 Grand Am?
I would suggest take the car to a recomened shop. Why would the girl above say to go to the deaership? Maybe because she works at one and does not want to tell you that they rip you off. One example, a honda dealership diagnosed a problem as a computer problem, said it would cost $1100. Took the car to a shop and it ended up being an O2 sensor, $100. Take the car to a shop and get it fixed. Most likey run you $150-$250. Depending on the condition of the rotors.
Cost to change brakes on 2001 Grand Am?
It depends on what all has to be replaced such as rotors, pads, calipers, etc...try some local shops that do free estimates.

This site may have some recommended shops in your area.....

    http://www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/fin鈥?/a>
If its just the pads it will probably be around 75
Almost any shop is cheaper than the dealer. look up in the yellow pages for places that specialize in brakes and mufflers. For brakes, they usually charge so much per axle (2 wheels). They also guarentee them - usually for so many miles or a year, etc.
I suggest to always take the car to the dealership. You would not believe how many cars come in to my shop complaining of squeaky brakes and they have cheap after market pads. Another thing that other shops like to do is discard the shims(help reduce sound) and a lot of them do not resurface the rotors when they do a brake job. The dealership is slightly more expensive, but you are gonna have GM techs working on your vehicle that have the proper knowledge to repair and they do not skip steps. The dealership also uses higeher quality factory pads which lasts longer and have more quiet operation.

  • How much should it cost to change brakes and rotors cost to change on a '01 Dodge Neon?

I took my car to get inspected and was told I need front brake pads and rotors. Sears gave me a quote of $380 and a local garage estimated it at $230. How much should I expect to pay for this service?
How much should it cost to change brakes and rotors cost to change on a '01 Dodge Neon?
forget sears and rob your buck take it to a midas or meineke and compare prices 380 is ridiculous 230 a little high it can go lower unless it needs calipers if it needs calipers 230 is not bad.

Can I use a turkey baster to remove brake fluid when changing my brake pads?

Instead of draining brake fluid under the car, can I use a turkey baster to remove brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir?
Can I use a turkey baster to remove brake fluid when changing my brake pads?
yes but be careful not to drip, brake fluid is corrosive
Can I use a turkey baster to remove brake fluid when changing my brake pads?
ummmm, if your changing your brake pads, you dont need to drain the brake fluid. open the master cylinder cap and put rags around it. relieves the pressure when you spread the calipers apart to get the pads out
Yes. I have done this myself

Just don't use it for food any more for obvious reasons
get a rag or a paper towel to quickly place it on the tip of the baster after you got the fluid in there. you know they drip...
You shouldn't need to remove any brake fluid to change the break pads, unless you want to change the fluid for other reasons. What I do is after I remove the caliper, I use a large C-clamp to compress it for re-installation. Keep the old pad on the caliper when you compress it to prevent damaging the caliper. You shouldn't need to do anything else if you car is similar to mine (1997 Jeep Cherokee).

How to change brakes on a 2000 Chevy Cavalier?

Alright so my friend wants me to change his brakes for him to save him some money. I have done this before on a 96 beretta and 2000 bonneville but i was just wondering if anyone had tips for me before i start tearing into it. I am very mechanically inclined so fixing cars comes easy for me but i just though i would ask to be safe.
How to change brakes on a 2000 Chevy Cavalier?
If your just doing the pads, it is simple. Remove the tire, unbolt the caliper. Remove the old pads. Use one of the old pads and a c-clamp to compress the piston(s). Spray down the new pads with brake cleaner, allow to dry. Don't wipe with a rag. Insert the pads into the caliper, attach supplied hardware with the new pads. Re-install the caliper over the rotor, replace the bolts. (before you compress the piston(s), remove the cap from the master cylinder) fill the master to the full level, replace cap, pump slowly till you have a high pedal. Replace tire. Note: If you don't open the break lines, there is no need to bleed the brakes.
How to change brakes on a 2000 Chevy Cavalier?
i,ll tell you the easy way of doing it. jack up both sides, take off the wheels and drums if it has shoes, then if you get stuck you can always go to the other side and look at it.

    A car question???

how long does it take to change a cars brakes?
    A car question???
A good, experienced mechanic should be able to do the job in less than an hour... It will take a bit more time if they need to have the rotors turned, or send out for parts.
    A car question???
It depends on the vehicle but about 1.5-2 hours to do all four wheels.
A good mechanic can change a set of brakes in little over an hour. It takes me all day.
shouldnt take long ones the wheel off bout 30 mins
Depends on the person's skill level, the condition of related parts, and the amount of rust encountered.

It would vary from 1 hour to 1 day or more.
Timing usually depends on ones experience with changing brake pads, and if you have to change both the front and rear pads or just the front. Most brake jobs are pretty straight forward and usually take about 30mins to a hour and a half depending on ones experience. Having the right tools will also decrease your time as well as make the job alot easier.

    Headlights+brakes stall car?

ok i just got done changing the spark plugs and doing the timing on my car (74 valiant) and it runs really good now and shakes alot less only problem is not knowing what my rpm is when i did the timing so i hope i did it right. stepping on the brakes makes the head lights dim for a split second but its always done this i know it cant be good. having the head lights on at a idle in drive holding the brakes will stall the car 10 secs later to me sounds like a bad ground i cleaned the 2 main grounds and it did nothing. maybe my idle is too low but putting it any higher will make the car sound like its racing. im lost i have a new alt and regulator and it didnt change anything.
    Headlights+brakes stall car?
just do a vacuum test on the car. it should be between 18-22 inches of vacuum if its low set the vacuum to 18 or 19 inches the your timing will be right. but i dont think timing is your problem. somthing might not be wired correctly check all your wiring

Brakes make a click sound when pressure is applied?

My boyfriend changed my brake pads today (it was his first time doing it) And now when I apply pressure to the brake it makes a click sound sounds like its coming from behind the radio if your sitting in the drivers seat. What could be causing this and is it dangerous?

Also I've already had to add brake fluid to the car is that normal? I'm a bit nervous.

What's wrong with my car brakes?

1984 Celica gt. If I drive around the block the breaks are fine but eventually they start getting tighter like they won't release normally. I just did some engine work and changed some vacuum hoses but I didn't touch anything brake related. I haven't really driven it much cause I just bought it but I didn't have this problem previously. Any information will help
What's wrong with my car brakes?
You do have a brake booster on that car that appears to be vacuum assisted based on parts offered for it.

So given that is where you made changes, that's the first place I would look for a problem. If you have created too much vacuum, you could be over assisting the brakes.

Exactly when those cars started having ABS is unclear to me. If you have ABS, the vacuum changes you made could result in problems as well.

I had an Audi that had a master cylinder that was acting up, and would cause the same problem you are seeing, but that was a known situation with the Audi, and it is not clear to me that is true for your car.

If after going back over your vacuum hose placement you don't find any problems, I suggest you try the forum below. It directly addresses your era Celica and someone there will more likely have an answer if it is something peculiar to that car, and is a coincidence to the changes you made.

You probably will have to join before you can post, but it looks to be free.

    Good luck.
What's wrong with my car brakes?
Could be a sticking caliper but most likely is the vacuum hose to the brake booster if you have recently changed them. The booster (power brakes) use engine vacuum to give the assist. Could be related. The booster is a can-shaped unit under the hood attached to the brake master cylinder.
This could be a couple of things, Stuck piston in the caliper or a blown/collapsed brake hose.
sounds like a stuck brake caliper.

drive it around untill it drags hard, then stop and feel the disks to see which one is hot.

Need Some car help (Brakes, rotor and serpentine belt) Please help?

Ok so i just got a 1998 Ford Escort from my grandma who passed away couple weeks back. So just to be safe i got it checked at Midas. They told me i had 2 get all my brakes pads, my front rotor and my serpentine belt changed. Im not really good with cars so please explain this to me. when they said get ur front rotor changed, what does that mean...both front tires...how many rotors does a car have..... And also does anyone know where i can get all these parts cheap. PLUS I DONT WAN TO SELL THIS CAR SO DONT SUGGEST THAT TO ME. thanks
Need Some car help (Brakes, rotor and serpentine belt) Please help?
You'll get a lot of opinions on cars, and mine from years of experience is not to go to the national chain store franchises like Midas, Goodyear, Firestone, and some others in large metropolitan areas. It's much better in my opinion to get to know some local independent shops you can find below that are recommended by your neighbors. The %26quot;gaurantees%26quot; you get at those chain stores and quickie lubes don't mean much. They end up charging you a lot anyways and less qualified mechanics are generally working on your car. The Ford dealer is a good place to get a diagnosis and quote for engine and transmission problems and let the independent shops do your brake, belts and hoses, exhaust, tires, and suspension work. When a car gets titled in your name at the motor vehicle department, it gets a safety check. If that safety check says your car is ok, then Midas is just trying to make money in my opinion rather than only fix what's needed to be fixed. Preventive maintenance like filter and fluid changes are specified in your owner's manual and are the most important thing for you to spend your money on.

Need Some car help (Brakes, rotor and serpentine belt) Please help?
The rotors are the brake rotors, and your car probably has four, one for each wheel/brake.

As the disc brake pads wear they also slowly wear away the rotors and will need to be replaced.

Serpentine belt is what drives your alternator, AC, power steering and stuff like that. That shouldn't cost you more than $10-$15 or so at an autoparts store. Don't know where you live, so it's hard to say where to get the parts cheapest, but most garages don't like you bringing in your own parts.

one hour labor and a quart of brake fluid...
Free with about an hour worth of work. It's so easy man. Just google it. It's hard to explain in detail here.
you don,t need the brake fluid changed. in all the 40 some yrs. i never change the brake fluid and i never had any trouble.
Not very much if you do it yourself. maybe the cost of a half quart of brake fluid tops. Just use a hand pump or even a turkey baster to get as much out of the master cylinder reservoir as possible, top it off, bleed the brakes, and top it off again. Be sure to use the correct brake fluid.

I have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra and i changed the rear brakes on it because they were squeaking after i fixed that i bled the brakes cause the peddle went to the floor. after i bled the brakes the brakes didnt work at all what happened or do i have to do something else please help me i have to be somewhere tomorrow and its important I am worried.
I need help with my brakes on my car?
The pedal shouldn't have gone to the floor. Might want to check if you have any brake fluid or if you are out after the bleeding. Your fluid is going somewhere or isn't moving at all. You need someone to help you bleed the brakes or use a mighty vac. You also need to check that you didn't rupture a line or kink any lines while changing the pads. If you let the calipers hang on the brake lines you may have broken one.

As far as bleeding brakes goes there is no reason not to bleed then when changing pads. DOT 3 is well know for off gassing the system doesn't have to be opened to need bleeding periodically. Simple changes in altitude. (mountains) can cause off gassing of DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluids. The moisture in the fluid boils out causing air to form in the lines. This is why there are bleeder valves on each wheel. If the auto companies could get away without using bleeder valves they would.

Since the wheel cylinder is the part of the system that experiences the most heat. It is the most likely place for the brake fluid to be hot. So that is where the most air pockets will form. Compressing the caliper piston to install the new pads will push the air back into the system. So yes changing the pads is a wonderful time to bleed the brakes.
I need help with my brakes on my car?
It's hard for anyone on this forum to tell you what you did wrong. First off, if you just changed the pads, there should have not been any reason to bleed the brakes. If you messed up bleeding the brakes, you allowed air into the system.

Did you bleed the brakes by yourself because brake bleeding is a two man job unless you have an automatic bleeder.
Yeah you probably messed up the bleed job, do it again with some help.
Unless you used a 1 man bleeding system (speed bleeder) then you probably messed up the bleeding. Get a 1 man bleeder and try again.

How far can I go with screeching brakes?

It sounds like metal scraping on metal. I want to take my car to my brother who could change my brake pads for me instead of shelling out 300+ bucks to some mechanic to do it. However, he lives 60 miles away. Should I go for it? Or will I crash and burn?

Go for it. take it easy on the brakes.
How far can I go with screeching brakes?
Just drive at a reasonable speed. I'm assuming they don't make any noise until you step on the brakes.

You will more than likely need the disc's turned if they are making that much noise already. Perhaps not. yes you should be able to make it.
You can go as far as you want as long as you don't need to stop!

Seriously, you stand a good chance of damaging your rotors/drums if you do this. That could get expensive.

listen to redrum....standard maintance on this vehicle will be expensive enough....if you get your pads changed soon enough....you may be able to keep your rotors and some places can resurface them while on the car....saving you hundreds

if you keep driving, not only will the rotors be too thin or damaged.....you could damge your calipers, adding another few hundred
listen you need 2 change the pads asap or the old ones will go metal 2metal then youll need disks too and eventually the pads will fall out causing the pistons to pop,and then youll have 2 buy callipers 2 spend 12 on pads and change them yourself its only 2 pins holding your old ones in, a retard could do it when you acctually see it
i would stop driving it and have it repaird this could mean your life or someone elses.. if you do the whole brake system yourself front and rear rotors calipers pads the fluid the cost will be under 200 for the parts.. ok.
yes you can ! you will most defintaly .whare out your rotors and beleave me on a 94 acord that will cost alot more !! cause in that case you would have to remove your whole front knuckel to replace them trust me change them now
Replace them, its a simple job and cheap, if not your rotors will need replaced, then your brake calipers, the hardest part of replacing brakes is taking the wheels off.

  • How do you change fron and rear disk brakes on a car?

Jack up the car, pull the wheel off, unbolt the two caliper bolts, pull off the caliper from the disc, pull out the old pads, anti-squeal plates, and anti-rattle clips. Use a C-clamp to push the pistons back into the caliper housing. Remove the C-clamp. Install the pads, clips, plates, and bolts in the reverse order. Walla, you are done. Any bozo can do it. That is why they have high-school dropouts doing it for you for minimum wage at brake shops and charge you around $200-300 for a job you can do yourself in 20 minutes or less for a $15 set of lifetime guaranteed brake pads from Autozone.
How do you change fron and rear disk brakes on a car?
First rmove the tire. Then you need to remove the caliper. Then the pads will be right there.
How do you change fron and rear disk brakes on a car?
don't forget you need to reset the pistons. and jell your new pads. and if your rotors are warped, you'll need new ones.
They are the easiest to replace. Not hard at all. Just do exactly what Dr. Evil said to do. Changing the disk brakes wont take that long at all. It will take you longer to tear everything apart and put everything back together again.

After new pads & rotors, should my car still squeal?

My brakes were squealing when I backed out of of our 45 degree drive-way. After a while, they began to squeal at other times--though not at at every single braking.

Had all the pads changed, had rear rotors changed. Car still squeals when I back out of drive. Should it be doing that? Or is that normal for new parts?
After new pads %26amp; rotors, should my car still squeal?
The rotors that were not changed should have been gone over lightly with fine sand paper (as well as the pads). New rotors should be cleaned. Sometimes you need to apply anti-squeal compound to the back of the pads. And sometimes the material of the pads does not work well with the type of metal used in the rotors. Cheap pads are noisy, short lived, and they wear out the rotors fast. Never buy the cheapest pads if possible. Always stick with a good medium quality or better. Brakes should not squeal.
After new pads %26amp; rotors, should my car still squeal?
brake parts typically have a film on them to prevent rust and such. typically it is recommended to wipe the brake parts with a cleaner such as %26quot;brake parts cleaner%26quot; this will remove the film and the inhibitor from the pads and rotors which will release allot of the squealing.

and yes typically it takes break parts a certain amount of time to loosen up to the vehicle.
they can if you got hard pads

Why did my car shake when ever I applied the brakes?

It's only six months old, literally, and none of the lights came on. It only did it for about a 45 min span two weeks ago and hasn't since.

I got an oil change and rotated my tires. The mechanic said nothing was wrong.
Why did my car shake when ever I applied the brakes?
tell your garage that you want the brake rotors checked as they are warped.
Why did my car shake when ever I applied the brakes?
you may need a wheel balancing or allignment. also, one or more of your brake calipers or rotors could be causing an issue.
ur brakes might need changing........brakes only last as long as the driver wants them to do to driving habits........
well i have had friends with this problem and the problem was that the car transmition could be wrong, well check with another mechanic because i cant tell you what is the problem with out seen the car
I would guess, from your description, you had a tire out of balance on the steering axle. Since you rotated tires it took the imbalanced tire and placed it on the rear axle. That was the cure. New tires would cure everything you described, as long as they get balanced. Since a rotation seems to have fixed the problem, next rotation have them balanced at the same time. Transmissions seldom cause a vehicle to shake, unless they fall apart within minutes. Tires are the normal cause. Brakes will cause pulling in one direction or the other, or a lot of vibration or noise. Start simple and use a good friend with knowledge before using a mechanic, It usually saves a butt-load of money
my friends Ford Mondeo had the same problem and it was down to the brake disc's being warped (bent a little) that makes the car shake when you as you slow down.

How do you change the brake fluid in your car?

my brake fluid is looking a little dirty, does the break fluid need to be changed out ever so often or is it something I dont need to change, just keep it filled?
How do you change the brake fluid in your car?
Get a repair manual for your car. That's the only real way to do it.
How do you change the brake fluid in your car?
Steal your mother's turkey baster out of the kitchen and suck some fluid out of the master cylinder. Then top off with new fluid. The next time you have a major brake problem, have them bleed the brakes.
When you put new brakes on you should %26quot;bleed%26quot; the brakes. this refers to adding fluid while pressing the brakes to flush out the old fluid. Bleed your brakes until you get the black gunk out.
well mate this isn't easy even us mechanics hate it the fluid is crappy n not nice stuff but if you insist get a Friend to help top reservoir up then start at the brake farest away from the master cylinder.. then using the correct spanner n some wd40.(be careful these snap easy and also round off!!) get the Friend to pump the pedal 3-4times the say..down (he will then hold his foot flat to the floor the u release the nipple.wait for all the pressure to go then tighten it back up..then tell Friend off..to release pedal...repeat until satisfied on all 4 corners of the car.. hope you got all that...

but its much easier to get the garage to do it..
this is not something you do yourself. take your car to a reputable brake shop and have them %26quot;pressure bleed your system%26quot; . this will eliminate dirty fluid plus all air that may be in the system, which if you have dirty fluid, their probably is air present. good luck

  • With ABS systems on most cars, how does it affect the changing of brake pads?

    http://videos.howstuffworks.com/discovery-turbo/33715-turbo-changing-brake-pads-video.htm

This video shows how to change brake pads, but here's my question. My dad knows how to change them, but he's afraid to do it with cars with ABS systems on them, fearing he'd somehow ruin it. Is there any difference? If so, could you link me to a video, or just tell me?
With ABS systems on most cars, how does it affect the changing of brake pads?
Remember to have your brake fluid changed every 2-3 years. Other than that, the pads are pretty much the same. Uswe ONLY the genuine brake fluid for your particular car found at your dealership. NEVER mix different brands of brake fluid together. Disaster follows, on down the road!
With ABS systems on most cars, how does it affect the changing of brake pads?
Depends on what kind of vehicle we're talking about. Early automotive applications of ABS would have a reserve pressure. That would be the ABS accumulator. Such accumulators are designed to hold a high PSi in the system. Red flag's up here. Follow all warnings and recommendations by the vehicle manufacturer. Especially when performing brake work.

    Best wishes and stay safe.
Explain to your dad that the ABS system is a sensor and ring attached to the hub - it has no bearing on the actual calipers and brake pads - which are generally the same parts on any specific vehicle whether the vehicle has ABS or not.
abs systems have a sensor usually located somewhere on the axle or on the spindle /mounting area. usually has a single wire attached to it. as long as you do not damage this or bend it etc. the procedure for changing pads is the same.
No difference. The calipers themselves don't have any ABS components in them.

Changing some wheel discs might affect the wheel speed sensors, but even these are quite simple.
It doesn't look any different. You will see the sensor, but it is inboard from where the pads are.

Borrowed a car and brakes went out?

I borrowed a friends car, well sorta. I did not ask he offered but I did not wanna get something from him for nothing. So we made a agreement that the week I was driving it I would give it back to him with a full tank of gas and I would get a oil change done for him at my own expense. I did both and I also asked him if there is anything wrong with the car that I should know about. He said just the tire will get low and keep and eye out for it. He expressed the car was in good shape all around otherwise. Well for a few days goes by and the brakes go out on the expressway and I come to a near accident trying to pump the brakes to stop. I went off the road and came to a stop finally. I notified my friend with in minutes of this happening and then I got it towed back to a service shop of his choice. He then had the cars brakes redone all around. He did not just fix the issue at hand but replaced almost everything from rotors to pads and brake lines. He did not give me a specific of what went wrong, but he did then ask me to pay the complete bill. I refused and told him the agreement we made was not for a car that would put my life at risk. He threatened to take me to court over it. So I also remind him that I would only be responsible for repairing the car to its original state but since he had went far beyond that How would I know what to pay him. Then he started to just make up a number of what I owed him. I told him since he mislead me and also put my life in danger he would have to take me to court for any reimbursement. I have watched enough Judge Judy to know when you borrow a car and something happens its your responsibility to restore it to its original state. However the original state was on the verge of breaking. Also because it put my life at risk I choose not to, What do you think .. how would you have handled this.
Borrowed a car and brakes went out?
if you did not have an accident and damage the car, but the brakes needed doing, that's on him. that's a long term service issue that he is financially responsible for as a part of the upkeep of his own vehicle.

now, if you did have an accident and damage the car, you should cover damage or deductible if insurance is paying.
Borrowed a car and brakes went out?
The main words are %26quot;original state%26quot; in others words to %26quot;make whole%26quot; again but not to make better than before you borrowed the car.

If he is still your friend I would offer he 1/4 of the bill after you have both seen it and verified that it all was done.
I would let him take me to court i would agree i owe him like 50 bucks and offer to pay him ... If he says no ... Let him take you to court and next time you pick a friend dont borrow there car my policy on that is if you drive it and it breaks you can fix it .... If you think you have a case see a lawyer .....
There are two parts to this to consider. When you first used the car you weren't having any problems, and he even notified you that it was in good shape which is fine. If the brakes were in poor condition and he knew it, then that would mean this is his fault, not necessarily yours. With that being said, if the brakes were in full working order when you began driving then its not his fault. That is where the second part comes in. You were in possession of the car. Since he said the car was in good and working order, that might mean that there was something you did while driving that caused the brakes to go out like they did. My suggestion to you is to pay up for your part of the bill. You shouldn't have to pay for the damages for the entire car. But pay up for the damages. But the bad part is you said he already paid for the brakes to be replaced. Its a tricky situation. Just pay for the damages where you can.
If I borrowed a car and caused any kind of damage to it, I would take it and have it repaired.

This is different. You did not cause the problem, it just happened to occur while YOU were driving.

It sounds like this guy is trying to get a lot of free brake work, when maybe a master cylinder would have been enough to fix it.

I think YOU are right to resist his demands. You COULD offer to pay a small % of the repairs, since he was nice enough to let you use the thing in the first place.
I think you did the right thing. If I lent a car to my friend and something broke I would never dream of demanding money for it. If they crashed it or dinged it a bit I would. If he'd been driving the car the same thing would have hapened to him, so it wasnt your fault. Dont pay a penny!
If the two of you are really friends, then legal action would not be needed. I suggest working out an agreement. Since you cannot prove he knew the brakes were faulty and he cannot prove you caused damage to his car intentionally, you should agree to pay half the bill. If he refuses to accept this, then sever your relations and let the lawyers do the talking.

After changing front brake pads, brakes are locked up.?

I have a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan. My friend (who has done brakes plenty of times) helped me change the front brake pads. We tried pushing the cylinder all the way in (after we found the lock up), but when I turn the car on and shift into any gear it just sits there - if I gun it, the wheels jump like the brakes are held on tight and the car will move a little. Any help?
After changing front brake pads, brakes are locked up.?
Assuming the problem is hydraulic, try opening the bleed valves on the two front calipers. After a tablespoon or so of fluid has come out - enough to ensure any pent up pressure is relieved - see how the system behaves. You will want to jack up the wheel and test it that way rather than by putting it in gear, which will require you to step on the brakes to shift into gear. This step of bleeding is just to identify whether the problem is hydraulic or solid mechanical.
After changing front brake pads, brakes are locked up.?
Sounds like you may have gotten incorrect brake pads? How easy did the pistons push back in? Did you clean and lube the caliper contact surfaces? Is the E-Brake on? Are the pads installed correctly?
sounds like the pistons are scored and not releasing,,,

or somthing is not put back togather properly????

    good luck,,,,,,,,,,,
Stating the obvious first. Did you have the emergency brakes on? Or did you do it safely and put chocks behind the rear wheels? Sorry, I have to ask.

Jack it up again and see if they spin freely. If you didn't completely reset the calipers to their full in position, they sometimes will lock up. Also, while doing that, did you allow for the fluid returning into the reservoir? If your lines were dirty, you may of pushed dirty fluid back into the system and a master cylinder will fail shut.

Try those first, then add more of what you did.

Changed Brake Pads now car won't stop!?

I drive a 2005 Mazda6i 5 door.....I changed the pads for both the front and rear of the vehicle. Once I was done I tried to drive to bed the brakes but the brakes are out....the car doesn't stop at all and the pedal basically goes all the way to the floor....did I get air in the system...or is it something more serious?
Changed Brake Pads now car won't stop!?
you have air in the system as you said. Bleed the brakes in the order recommended by Mazda.

Get a friend to work the brake pedal as it is a bit hard to do with only one person.
Changed Brake Pads now car won't stop!?
assuming you have 4 wheel disc brakes, im guessing you didnt have to open the caliper bleeders right? To replace pads, all you have to do is compress the caliper piston, and the new pads will set right in. If you didnt open the valves, give it a few more pumps, to let the pistons come back out to their normal spots. If you did open a line for some reason, you will have to bleed your brakes. Also, if you see fluid anywhere, you could have blown a caliper piston seal by pushing it in too far.
sounds like you need to bleed the brakes, get the air out, and go from there.
Did you pump the pedal several times to take up the slack from retracting the pistons?

    Try that.

If you did not open up the hydraulic system, you don't need to bleed the brakes.

If, after you pump the pedal several times, you still have a low pedal, look under the car for a puddle of brake fluid. It is possible that you have a leak.

    Car brakes are pumping...please read?

I drive a 2003 Mazda 6. I bought this car exactly 2 years ago. I had put new brakes on the car when I bought it (2 years ago). This car just hit 65,000 miles. I live in Pennsylvania and I have no choice but to drive a lot. I also have not replaced my tired yet. Every time I had gotten an oil change, my mechanic had said everything checked out good. I have been going to them for years and they have never done me wrong. For my last oil change, which was 3 months ago, I went to Wal Mart to get it done. They told me I would need a new car battery soon and that I would need new tires mid winter. It is not March and I have not replaced the tires yet, nor battery. The passed few weeks, I have noticed that when I push the brakes, my car vibrates. It is worse when I am trying to brake on a hill. It almost feels as if my car won't stop ( which I am scared that it won't one day ). I am hoping that it is the tires because of money. My tires also look like they may need air in them.

Just by these details, does anyone think they may know the problem? The more I read about it, the more it sounds like the brakes. What are the cost of brake pads %26amp; rotors? And as for tires, I usually get the general kind, nothing fancy or special at all. Just by going from what Wal Mart said, I feel as if it would be the tires, but I could be completely wrong.

I am taking my car to the mechanic this Friday. However, I just want to be prepared and know the possible outcomes that may be. Since I am a young girl, I don't want anyone to try and take advantage of me. I do know some about cars, I'm not completely clueless.

Can anyone let me know my possible car problem/problems, what questions to ask the mechanic, and pricing of things for my 2003 Mazda 6?
    Car brakes are pumping...please read?
A vibration during braking is usually an indication of warped rotors, not bad tires. If you have a penny, insert the portion with ABE's head into the tread. If you can see the top of Abe's head the the tires are worn to the point that they need replacing. Brake pads and rotors will vary, in cost, from car to car and from one place to another. Try to get estimates from two or three places.
    Car brakes are pumping...please read?
It really sound like warped rotors the way you describe it. One thing important on these smaller cars, is always insist on a hand torque when they remove and replace a wheel for any reason, as over tighteningg the lug nuts can and will cause the rotors to warp, and follow the bolt tightening pattern.
Before anything I would check the brake fluid. Vibration is usually a front end problem and I would take it to an alignment shop first. I could be something as simple as a wheel/tire out of balance or a more serious problem with the front suspension. Get a couple of estimates first. Remember, to error is human, even the most loyal mechanic can make a mistake.
You are likely going to need new rotors and brake pads. Look at a bill of about $550.00 .This should cover parts and labour. They might tell you that the callipers are seized. If they do, you should ask them if they can heat them up and remove the sliders, clean them on a wire wheel and re-grease them. If they do all of this and can get them to work again you can save about $500.00 .Brakes are expensive but they are the most important system on your vehicle.Do yourself a favour and remember how useful wal mart's advice was and stick with a reliable mechanic.
sounds to me more like brakes. if it was the tires it would do it when you were taking off, if it was a broken belt, or it would do it all the time if it was tire failer.you could take it by a tire shop and ask them to check your tires.btw thats smart of you to change your rotors at the same time most people dont do that so kidduos to you!!! were i live it aout $100.00 for the brakes plus the rotors. if your rotors arn`t bad you may not need to have them worked on.resurfaced.
I had this problem on my car and replacing the front brake rotors worked. The rotors get wharped over time and the front end of the car will shake when you hit the brakes.

My friend is a mechanic and he gave me a good deal on replacing them. In my case, the factory rotors were $83/each and he charged me $50 labor to replace them. The pads still had a lot of meat on them and he kept them on.

    Good luck.

    you need a mechanic

I want to change my car contact brake point with CDI is it possoble?

Absolutely. Helps to know what kind of car ,but they are made to fit almost everything

My brakes on my car are wore completly out?

what could happen if i wait to change them? they have been this way for about two weeks.
My brakes on my car are wore completly out?
If you wait too long, they will wear out your rotors, and you'll have to replace those too. See if you can find someone you know to put them on for you, and you'll save yourself some money. Don't wait too long, or you'll be paying more!
My brakes on my car are wore completly out?
you could damage rotors and your calipers would be less expensive to just change the brakes.
You'll scrape up the rotors, possibly to the point where they would have to be replaced. In the rear, if they're drum brakes, there's a possibility that the shoes could wear down so much that the piston in the wheel cylinder will extend too far and pop out a bit, leading to a big loss of braking power. If you absolutely need to wait to change your brakes (I've been in that situation), just give yourself lots of time to slow down, try to let the car slow down on its own, and downshift the transmission if you have to.
You could completely lose your braking ability. DO NOT drive the car till you get your brakes fixed. The car is NOT SAFE TO DRIVE and could result in an accident that can injure or kill someone. Do you want that on your conscience? Spend the money and get them fixed pronto.
if you keep riding on them its going to mess up your rotors and drums if they arent allready i would get them changed asap either go to a shop do it youself but if you do your gonna have to get a cliper to check your rotors or drums to make sure they arent too thin and if there is in big gouges or scratches in them take them to a shop to get them turned and smoothed out if there is enough metal if you look at them and they are faily smooth without alot of gouging in them just replace your shoes or pads. a disk break is much easier then a drum so depending on what you have get the right manual on how to dissasemble and replace. and if you disconnect the break line be sure to bleed it to get any air bubbles out otherwise stopping will be a big problem so be very carefull if you need to disconnect completely i find it easier to go not disconnect and then push the pressure plate back in with a c clamp
First you wear through the pads. The metal backing will then press against the rotor. You will ruin the rotor. Then when you wear through the metal backing, the piston will press up against the rotor. When the piston wears enough, it will pop out and lock up the wheel.
I addition to destroying your rotors , you could have a wheel lock up if it wears out and a caliper piston pops out . Then you will be buying new calipers too. As well as being stuck.

Brake pedal on my 94 firebird goes to the floor after i changed the brakes?

i changed the brakes on the car all around and bleed them and took it to get bleed i come to find out my boyfriend ran out of brake fluid and put power steering in it...... did that damage the master cycinider? when i brake it stops easy sometimes and sometimes it dont sometimes it goes to the floor and dont stop
Brake pedal on my 94 firebird goes to the floor after i changed the brakes?
OMG you need to flush the entire system out. it will take forever to get power steering fluid out. try cracking the bleeders and letting them gravity bleed but dont let the reservoir run out or you will get air in the system which on the GM Fbodys can be a pain to get out. Use DOT3 brake fluid and your gonna need a lot of it probably 2 quarts will flush it good enough. use almost all the fluid with gravity bleed and then close the bleeders and top off. put the top on the master cylinder and pump the brakes. With the pedal on the floor have someone open the right rear bleeder and then repeat until all air is out of that caliper. top off fluid and then move to the left rear and repeat. top off and move to the right front and then to the left front. Tip: dont open bleeder until pedal is down and dont lift off pedal until bleeder is closed. dont let the brake fluid get on any paint because itacts like paint thinner and will peel paint off anything. also the power steering fluid will evaporate under heavy braking leaving you with no brakes because the fluid turned to a gas and the brake system works on the principle of hydraulics it has to remain a liquid. also if the brake fluid you used bleed the brakes the last tim has not had the cap on good throw it away brake fluid is hydroscopic and absorbs the moisture in the air and it too will evaporate like the ps fluid. dont drive the car until fixed!!!!!

    ASE Certified Technician

The master cylinder is probably fine just wrong fluid and air in system.
Brake pedal on my 94 firebird goes to the floor after i changed the brakes?
You need to flush the system and bleed all the air out.
This recently happend to me you want to get a new master brake cylinder as soon as possible. Make sure you take it to a certified mechanic because the procedure to change it is very complicated
you have to bleed the brakes until all the power steering fluid is out of the system, then refill with brake fluid. It probably didn't hurt your brake system any, but the oil in power steering fluid is the same as that in a transmission NOT in a master cylinder. Just bleed them till it's empty, refill, then have it re-bled.
buy a rebuild kit which is cheaper and rebuild it yourself.
You are in trouble. The first thing you need to do is pull the master cylinder and %26quot;Bench Bleed%26quot; it. this involves getting a kit from your local parts store and installing the plugs and hoses onto the master cylinder. Then you push the piston in the back of the master cylinder in and out until you get all the air out of it, and just fluid comes out of the hoses (they were part of the kit). reinstall the master cylinder and bleed the brakes, starting with the right rear (it is the farthest from the M/C) and bleed them, and bleed them. It will take a while to get TO the air, much less get rid of it. On the fronts, it is possible to %26quot;Gravity bleed%26quot; them. You do this by opening the bleeder screws and let them drain. You will still have to pump them up and bleed them, but it will be much less trouble.

If you can get it to a shop, and if they have one, there is a tool called a bleeder ball that makes it much easier, but you will have to pay them to do it. You will need ALOT of fluid to do this, but by the time you are done, you will never run one out of brake fluid again!!!!!! At least i have not, not since i pulled the same stunt ya'll did 30 years ago lol. Good Luck
Nothing should be damaged. I've worked on cars that someone made this mistake before. All you really need to do is to bleed the system (front %26amp; back), refill, and bleed.
Firstly I would explain the difference in colour between transmission Fluid and Brake fluid. Normally Transmission fluid is red and Brake fluid is green. If you can't bleed out the Transmission fluid that's in your Brake System take the vehicle to your favourite Auto Mechanic, he will do that and it shouldn't cost much, Also ask your mechanic to check the seals in your brake system (Reason: The Transmission Fluid may have damaged the seals) The reason for the pedal going to the floor is that most likely has air trapped in the system. This has to be %26quot;Bled out%26quot; If your not mechanically minded take your car to a Motor Mechanic, all four wheels will have to %26quot;Bled%26quot; starting at the rear and then the front. WhenTransmission fluid gets hot it has less %26quot;Viscosity%26quot; and it expands. So basically auto Trans fluid is just too thin, your mechanic will flush your brake system to get rid of the Auto Trans fluid and then Re-Fill with Brake Fluid. A suggestion: Maybe your your %26quot;Boyfriend%26quot; should undertake a short course in %26quot;Getting to know your car%26quot; or something similar! Regards SadSack.

Whats the best place to get a tune up for your car?

i think i need a tune up on my car - brake pads, oil changes, alignment and stuff.

i know places like Walmart, Sears, Jiffy Lube, Midas all do it but what is the cheapest place to go with actual good work? trying to avoid spending like $300+ at the dealership
Whats the best place to get a tune up for your car?
Well sorry to tell you this but if you need a 1. Tune up

    2. Brakes

    3. oil change

    4. alignment

you are going to spend alot more than $300 even at a non-dealer service center. You are NOT going to be able to do an Alignment at Home like the other person said . Call around and compare prices but if you are getting all this done at a dealer for $300 I would jump on it They must really be dicounting their parts and service rates.
Whats the best place to get a tune up for your car?
The best is to do it yourself, which isn't hard. You can spend under 100$ on all the things you need.

I change my rear brakes but my car don't stop on a dime ?

The rear brakes don't do much, especially in hard stops. Check out those front brakes. If the pads look okay but shiny they may be glazed - sanding the surface with some 60 grit sandpaper will fix that. Avoid breathing the dust from teh brakes or from sanding them.
I change my rear brakes but my car don't stop on a dime ?
What type of brakes do you have, shoes or pads ?

Shoes, it would mean your star adjusters are not adjusted.
I change my rear brakes but my car don't stop on a dime ?
Some brake pads (or shoes if your rears are drums) take several moderately hard stops to break-in before you get maximum stopping power. I'll never forget the first time I changed my own brakes - I did all 4 and the first time I drove it afterward I nearly rear-ended a car in front of me because I didn't realize the new pads would barely stop the car. After about a day of driving with some moderately hard stops (and while leaving a huge following distance between me and anyone else), my brakes worked really well, but at first it was borderline scary how poorly they stopped the car.
No car will stop on a dime. If you bleed the brakes the performance should inprove a good deal. Also adjust the parking brake.
if rear brakes are drum drive in reverse and slam brakes that will set it

also do this anyway change your front brakes because the front brakes to roughly 70% of ur braking
did you adjust the brakes up when you put them on? pull the drums and adjust the shoes a little tighter against the drums.
Would help if there was more info.

If there drum brakes, make sure the smaller shoe is in the front and that they are adjusted write.

If you got air in the line you will have to bleed the lines.

If there dic breaks make sure all the sevices are clean and lightly lubed so the calipers can float.

If you didn't change the calipers make sure the pistons are working and not hanging up.

Same thing with air in the fluid.

    Bleed them.

My car takes a long time to start after air filter and brake pad change

I just changed out my brake pads and air filter, and now my car is acting really weird when I try and start it.

It barely turns over for about 10 seconds (sounds like a dead battery at first), then it starts turning over (it does this for about 5 seconds) and then eventually it starts. Once it's started, everything seems to run as normal.

It was starting just fine yesterday. COuld I have damaged something that would have caused this while changing brake pads or the air filter?

    Thanks for your help.
My car takes a long time to start after air filter and brake pad change
Does not sound likely you could have damaged something. Unless you got debris into the air intake system which you could have clogged the throttle body. Thats just a possibility.

Maybe a coincidence but I would check out your battery at autozone or some automotive store with the special tool to check cold cranking amps.

Maybe your plugs and wires are due for replacement, this also causes slow cranking.

Has anyone done the front brakes on a Lincoln LS?

I have a 2000 Lincoln LS and I need to change the brakes. Has anyone done it on this car? I have done brake jobs in the past... Is this going to be easy like the other rotor brakes jobs are, or is there something special that I need to know about... I will probably change the rotors and pads...
Has anyone done the front brakes on a Lincoln LS?
they are easy. no special tools needed.
Has anyone done the front brakes on a Lincoln LS?
On the rears if you have disks, you will need a special tool to turn the piston back in. It doesn't compress like the fronts. The tool fits on your ratchet and cost about $13.00 at any auto parts store.

The car turns off after i hit brakes and shift to any gear. AT?

i just changed the automatic trans for a 97 dakota. i turn it on but when i shift to rev. or drive it turns off hard. i lifted the back wheels and didn't use the brake, just shifted to drive and the car ran and stayed on. what can the problem be.
The car turns off after i hit brakes and shift to any gear. AT?
A torn intake air boot can do this.
The car turns off after i hit brakes and shift to any gear. AT?
Change your oil in your rear transfer case, check the oil in the automatic trans to make sure it has enough.

The brakes are strange, but I don't think this is a symptom of the trans.

To check the trans, keep those back wheels in the air and shift to each position on the trans. 1-2-3-N-OD-D-R (whatever it is). Each position, let it roll for a minute before going to the next position. Put the rear down and check the AT fluid level.
a bad brake booster can do that or a vacuum leak around the hose connecting to it
    Hello,

I think you have a bad safety shut off switch(shorting out). Some vehicle have this switch on the brake or clutch pedal. The switch is located under the drivers dash near the brake or clutch assemble.also brake switch that controls your brake lights, might be built in together 4 wire switcher or two switches connected on one pedal.Try to jump out the switch by using a jumper wire.Take the switch to a auto store and they will match it for you.

    I Hope this helps Pete

I recently had my brakes changed and now I have a scrubbing noise in the front; could it be a rotor?

I just had the brakes changed on a PT Cruiser, 2006; the day that they were changed I heard a scrubbing noise in the front; now the noise is even louder; the car doesn't shake and it stops fine; the noise is terrible. Any ideas?
I recently had my brakes changed and now I have a scrubbing noise in the front; could it be a rotor?
Does it do it all the time or only when you apply the brakes?

If it does it all the time, it could the shield that is just behind the rotor. Often this gets a little tweaked when the front is worked on.

In any case, take it to the person or place who replaced the brakes.
I recently had my brakes changed and now I have a scrubbing noise in the front; could it be a rotor?
sounds to me like one of the bolts that holds the brake caliper to the bracket has come out (not tightened ) and is rubbing your wheel.

use someone you know's towing insurance and have it towed vack to the shop, and tell them you want them to show you the damage
Personal experience, a brake pad was put on backwards. The back part of the pad was being applied to the rotor instead of the soft %26quot;pad%26quot; side. It stopped perfectly fine but was obviously wrong (loud and grinding sound).
it could be when they changed the rotors the backing plate got bent and rubbing on the rotor.just take a screwdriver and bend it away from the rotor, it,s nothing but tin.
that wizardu fellow may be right, he also may be a master tech but do you think after 35+ years he would know that brabes don stop a car
so you turned right around ,returning to shop...right?..My WAG is sticking caliper,,,distroying the rotor,,,200 to 250 repair..

  • How do you change the rear brakes on my car?

    1998 Dodge Stratus es, v-6.

I was going to change my front brakes and was wondering if I need to change my rear brakes also? How do I do the rear brakes? How do I tighten up my emergency brake handle? when i pull the handle it pulls all the way up and doesn't seem to hold the brakes tight enough? Any help would be appreciated.
How do you change the rear brakes on my car?
    Front brakes do tend to wear out faster than rear brakes, but the only way to tell for sure is to look at the thickness of the linings, and change them before they wear all the way through, or if they are starting to crack or crumble, or if they are contaminated by brake fluid from a leaky wheel cylinder. The actual procedures for changing brake pads/shoes and other parts, and adjusting your emergency brakes can be found here;

    http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/090鈥?/a>
How do you change the rear brakes on my car?
i am not familar with the car therefore has it disc brakes on all wheels or discs front and drums at rear,,if drums at rear then more recently on later models(its all about protecting manufacturers advantage)they tend to put the adjusters up on top of the exhaust pipe,,,so you have to remove the exhaust before you can adjust the handbrake ,making sure you need to take it to a garage and they charge you accordingly,,,same reason the engine fills the engine compartment so you cannot maintain the car yourself,

drum brakes at rear usually if you can see or feel around the back of the wheel hub you will find (usually square)an adjuster(you have to buy the required adjuster spanner,,jack wheel up and turn by hand, turn adjuster with brake off until friction is felt ,,1 qtr turn back until wheel spins freely and then repeat at other side of the car ,,

a handbrake should usually be Fully on when from the off position it is fully On when pulled up on the ratchet you hear 8 or 9 clicks
seek expert help, don't mess with brakes if you 'haven't a clue', and by asking on here you 'haven't a clue'....

Get a manual on that model of Opel and it will tell you what to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
i would take a guess that you are working on the rears? if im right that piston has to be rotated in order for it to go back in to make room for the new pads. rear calipers on a rear disc setup are kind of like a screw, so rotating them will make them go back in. direction im not sure of but you will know if you are going the right way because the piston length will get shorter, if your going the right way. if it gets longer rotate the other direction.
