My car seem to be losing power when I hit the brakes, does anyone know what is wrong with my car?

I will start my car and hit the brakes to change to drive and my lights will act like they are going out. My car also sounds like it wants to stop and I have to restart it. I don't know if it needs a new battery or spark plugs or what.

There may be a leak in your car's vaccuum boosted power brake system. A drop in engine manifold vaccuum could cause a drop in engine RPM and produce results like you're seeing. Have it checked out by a mechanic that you trust in your area. It could be a safety issue.

brake fluid
Sounds electrical, check the battery and alternator. My car started doing someting similar, except the car would actually die and everything would go nuts...it was one of the cords connected to the alternator that kpet coming out.

Maybe have a look at the fuses, and replace them.
could be a number of things timing, tune up, it is more mechanical than electrical batteries start the car then they sit there alternator works off the batteries creating volts. if you turn the headlight on and they start dimming alternator is bad batteries if your car dont start so look for timing or air fuel mixture wich several sensors are involved also if you have no take off power along with what you describe check exhaust system for restrictions like catalityc converter clogged or muffler place you hand at tail pipe and compare to a good running car there shouldnt be much difference ( at idle )
could also be a vacuum line. you can get a vacuum diagram for your car thru the manufacturer or a public library
need to know if it is a gm product front wheel drive car if so than sounds like torque converter lockup switch.

  • How do you stop an Automatic Car if the Brakes stop working?

I am learning to drive a Automatic Car, but I was wondering what I should do if the Brakes stop working. I know in a Manual Car you change down gears to slow down, but I noticed it isn't possible to change down Gears yourself in a Automatic Car.

So how do you stop in a Automatic Car without the brakes?

    Thank you for any help.
How do you stop an Automatic Car if the Brakes stop working?
It is possible to slow down using the transmission, just put it into D1 or Low, it will engine brake almost as good as a manual.

Whoever is teaching you is not doing a very good job with regards to the capabilities of an automatic gearbox.
How do you stop an Automatic Car if the Brakes stop working?
Slowly apply the emergency brake and/or shift down into 2 then 1. 2 is 25mph and 1 is 15mph so that helps to slow you down quite a bit as well.

    You can %26quot;shift%26quot; an automatic.
    steer towards solid, stable objects
Pumping foot brake sometimes gives a bit of brake apply handbrake on an off, u can apply handbrake hard while turning steering on to full lock

this will face you in other direction but needs experience and clear road %26amp; depending on speed.

Most cars are have dual braking system back %26amp; front if one fails other still works

Other than that slow down using what surroundings you have hedges side of car scraping wall care full of kerbs can overturn.
Most cars are fitted with a duel circuit braking system which means there are 2 braking system if you lose your front brakes you have still got your rear brakes , if you lose your rear you still got your front brakes, and of course you got your park brake as a 3rd option, it is very unlikely you would be left with no brakes whatsoever , if you lost front or rear you would have bad brakes but you could still stop the car,, hope this helps

    Regards
    put it in neutral obviously

My car is not changing into gear and it brakes up while driving. It also reve out when driving. whats the prob

It is a 1999 Mitsubishi Lancer. The Electronic Control Unit is OK and the Transmission is ok and the Transmission Filter i just change and the oil.
My car is not changing into gear and it brakes up while driving. It also reve out when driving. whats the prob
maybe a new car would help check your transmission bands sounds like they are slipping
My car is not changing into gear and it brakes up while driving. It also reve out when driving. whats the prob
if you just changed the filter it's not seated properly. Redo it and make sure there's only one oring or gasket where the filter meets the transmission. Also make sure it's full of fluid to the correct level.
    Trany is shot
DID YOU US THE RIGHT FLUID FOR LANCER U KNOW MITSUBISHI USES A SPACIAL FLUID IF U USED SOME THING ELSE YOU MY FRIED THE TRANS MISSION
your transmission is slipping. it may be caused by a bad speed sensor, or the trans is bad. next time, do your preventive maintenance before you have a problem: key word being PREVENTIVE

Servicing my car brakes - how does this tool work?

    Hi,

I've got a MK4 VW Golf. Soon I need to do service the brakes with new discs and pads.

    1) I know I'm going to need a brake calliper piston rewind tool to do my brake change, but can you please tell me how this tool works?

    http://www.toolsnstuff.co.uk/product_inf鈥?/a>

All I can see is a little square thing... can't work out how it would push the calliper back.

    2) Also.. would this be a better tool for the job? (At least I can see roughly how it works in principle)

    http://www.toolsnstuff.co.uk/product_inf鈥?/a>

    3) And finally (sorry)... is this for a different aspect of servcing the brakes, or is it another calliper rewind tool?

Thanks if you can help a bit. :)

The first 2 are for REAR disc brakes. The front disc calipers just needs to be pressed. The rear disc brakes calipers needs to be pressed AND twisted. If you try to just press the rear disc brakes (without twisting them), you will break them (as in DAMAGE THEM).

The first tool is UNIVERSAL in that there are 6 sides and each side fits different kind / make of rear disc brakes. Trust me when I say, THEY SUCK. You have to twist them (using a ratchet wrench) AND press hard with your wrist and arms.

Get the second kind. You'll thank me later.

The third kind is for high performance caliper that has multiple calipers (on both sides of the disc). With those kinds a regular cheap C-clamp type don't work.

    Good Luck

a simple %26quot;c %26quot; clamp (big enough) will do the trick. those tools the garages or dealers sell you, don't buy them. remember, those guys work off commission, buy yourself a big %26quot;C%26quot; clamp down at Lowes or home depot for 15 bucks. They have worked well for me for 20 years.
buy your self a manual for the car it will tell you all you need to know and what tools you need
Number 2 is the best tool for spinning in your rear calipers. number 3 is for calipers that don't have to be spun in. you shouldn't have to get No. 3. You can use a big crescent wrench or a small pry bar to get the front pistons to retract.
use a G clamp. so far I've never got a caliper that you can't push the pistons back with one, easy to use and cheap as chips.

How can I change the brakes on my car?

I watched this guy do it and when he took the springy things off, those two curved metal things came off are they supposed to?
How can I change the brakes on my car?
Changing brakes is not a difficult job. Sounds like the two curved metal thingys are the break shoes (or linings). That is the part that is supposed to be changed. There is a leading shoe and a trailing shoe - don't get them mixed up. Like I said, not difficult, but very important that you get it right. I strongly suggest that you either get a manual for the car you are working on, or have someone who is very experienced help guide you through the first one. A mistake here can cause serious damage or injury.
How can I change the brakes on my car?
yes they come off, those are your brake shoes, and are you replacing your front or rear brakes and are they drum or disc brakes?
Sounds like brake shoes on a drum system. Yes, they are supposed to come off. You'll need a new set exactly like them. Make sure to put it all back together the same way... then you have to adjust the brakes so the drum fits back in place... if in doubt, get a Chilton's manual or hire the work out.

It's one thing if a car can't go... it's another if the car can't stop!!!
why dont you just take your car to the shop?
As this is all new to you, visit www.autozone.com/servlet/uibroker This site gives you helpful information on service instructions.
The curved things are the brake shoes and the springy things are the retainers--there are also springs across the brake shoes and a cable to the emergency brake lever--on rear brakes. You can probably see for yourself it is a simple job--BUT there is more to a decent brake job. The drum must be measured and ground true (or replaced) and the adjuster mechanism and everything else must be cleaned and lubricated (not the shoes surfaces which must remain clean). Also, the brake cylinders which operate the shoes must be checked for leakage and/or replaced. The job should also include the messy cleaning and repacking of the wheel bearings.

Car making noise even when i changed the brakes?

    Hi,

I recently changed the brakes on my 94 Mustang GT. The problem is that it keeps making these %26quot;clunk%26quot; noises when I%26#039;m about to brake, or when I brake, or sometimes after I break. These noises have been going on for a while and I thought changing the brakes would solve the problem. What could it be? Thanks in advance!|||1 ball joints

    2 shock/strut /or its mount

    3 universal joint [driveshaft]

    4 [anti] sway bar bushings

front end is 15 yrs old...how much has been replaced???|||Clunks like this usually caused by worn U-Joints or differential. I%26#039;d check the U-joints first. They are easiest to check and cheapest to fix. You could probably just change them now and see if the noise goes away. If not, at least you have replaced 14 year old %26quot;wear%26quot; parts that probably needed it anyway.|||Brakes do not clunk. It could be a broken suspension piece, it could be a universal joint. If it were me, I%26#039;d be in my mechanics face..nicely but in his face anyway. If you had it done in a big box store like Walmart Automotive..good luck

If you said..my car clunks, fix it that%26#039;s one thing. If you said fix my brakes, that is another. Either way you may have a serious situation that needs fixing|||1 you want to make sure all of the clips for the pads are on then you want to make sure the bolt sleeves are in good condition. and then if that does not work it maybe your ABS that is making the problem happen

Changing the rear brakes on my 97 Sentra. How do I get the star adjuster to spin out?

I guess I%26#039;m just stuck on stupid cuz I%26#039;ve done this cars brakes before but I can%26#039;t get the adjuster to spin out. Got to go to work in the morning so can you help?|||Not sure what you%26#039;r asking. You have to adjust the self adjusters all the way in to install the brake shoes. Then you turn the star out with a screwdriver until the shoes are close to the brake drum. Then you drive backwards, hitting the brakes every few feet until it feels right and the handbrake is correct. And yes, you can adjust the self adjusters by applying the handbrake as you go backwards slowly.
