ive just noticed that lately when i go to brake, they feel soft and for the first half of pushing down on them the car speeds up so i have to push fully down to stop. what could be the cause of this the brake pads where changed not too long ago ?
thanks
Car brakes soft and need too push right down to brake?
the thing is either your are loosing brake fluid or your have air in the lines find the leak fix and bleed the system. there is also the rare occasion that the rear brakes are out of adjustment but this only happens if the rear is drums and if the shoes were changed good luck.

Bleed the brakes
Brakes were not bled properly, there is likely air in the lines.
Bleed the brakes.
I dont know what kind of car u have. But if you have drums brakes in the rear, I would suspect that they are just out of adjustment. If you dont use your e-brake that often the brakes dont really adjust in the rear and after a while you will feel a low pedal. So, this is only if u have drum brakes in the rear. You will take them off and turn the star wheel a bit to push the brakes out a little.
Above is your answer... the break lines have air and them and create that spongy feeling. On top of your calipers there is a bleeder valve loosen it and pump the breaks for a bit till you get a stream of fluid out of them. tighten the bleeder and top off the brake fluid res.
If just your pads were done then bleeding the brakes won't help, but if not and a shop did the work. take it bake to them and they will bleed the brakes for free. Note: Only do this if they replaced something hydraulic i.e. brake lines/hose, calipers or wheel cylinder. It sounds like your master cylinder is going bad. If so get it fixed ASAP or you will have no brakes soon. When you apply the brakes the brake booster assists you in compressing the master cylinder with vacuum from your engine. A bad master cylinder requires more vacuum causing your engine to run faster to create more.
