I have a 1999 Nissan Altima. Everytime I apply the brakes it makes noise and goes off when I take my foot off the brake. I was wondering if it is the brake shoes or brake pads or rotors or something that I cant think off. Also how can I change the brake shoes if thats the problem. Thanks in advance

You prob need to replace your front brake pads. When they're running low, there's a strip of metal that rubs on the discs that squeals to let you know it's time to replace them.
Quick diagnostic is to remove the front wheels and visually inspect the brake pads and see if the metal strip is in contact with the rotor. Should cost about $100 per axle to replace pads at a garage, or if you DIY about $30 for pads at an auto parts store and about half hour of your time to replace.

Yes it sound like your brakes are about worn out.. Disc brakes have a little piece of metal that rubs on the rotor when the are close to being wore out. That is most likely what you are hearing.. and yes disc brakes are fairly easy to replace.
good luck

if you don't know what to look for you should take it into a shop and have it done, yea you might save some doing it yourself but are you willing to take the chance that you did it right? it is an easy job to replace the ft brakes just make sure it's done right for safety reasons.
