Why are the brakes on my car squeaking? How can I tell if it's normal or not?

I haven't noticed any real change in braking performance. The brakes are 4 wheel disc brakes.

Bruce, some metallic brakes will squeal when applying the brakes. How ever if the squeaking occurs while driving, a lot of pads / shoe and linings have what is known as a wear sensor(bent piece of metal to let ya know its contacting the rotor or drum . This is to let ya know that you are running with the piston or wheel cyl. is extended out enough from lining or pad wear to contact either the rotor or drum

go get it fixed at the garage
it might be an indication that your brakes are going out soon, however sometimes they squeak and there is nothing wrong with them. You might want to get them checked out just in case.
Well you could take the tires off and check how much material's left on the brake pads. They do have to be replaced once in a while. They can damage the rotors if they wear out and aren't replaced soon enough.
Its never normal for your brakes to make any kind of sound.

you prabably need new ones before they cause a bigger more expensive problem
sounds like the wear clips on your brake pads these let you know that it is time to change your pads
Maybe your brake pads have worn out and the wear indicator is digging into a rotor when you brake. Change the pads now, or you will have to replace both pads and rotors.
that's your early warning device on your brake pads.time to work the brakes.
Several good answers already posted for this question, but you may have a buildup of brake dust. Dust can also cause a noise. Most auto parts stores carry a brake cleaner, just make sure to read the instructions first. You don't want to blow all that dust into the air to breathe in.

Just a thought to try before making expensive repairs.
the linings on the pads are either worn down to the wear indicators or the pads have been replaced at some stage with cheaper style pads which use a high content of soft metals in the pad material and cause a squeak however with brakes you can never be too carefull get it checked,
GET YOUR BRAKES CHECKED OUT COMPLETELY FRONT TO REAR.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.
You have at least one of them worn so that its metal to metal... You can check it your self... But I would take it to Minake and have4 them look at it... Or maybe a PEP Boys their cheaper.... Good lucki Grant from Pennsylvania
