The car turns off after i hit brakes and shift to any gear. AT?

i just changed the automatic trans for a 97 dakota. i turn it on but when i shift to rev. or drive it turns off hard. i lifted the back wheels and didn't use the brake, just shifted to drive and the car ran and stayed on. what can the problem be.

A torn intake air boot can do this.

Change your oil in your rear transfer case, check the oil in the automatic trans to make sure it has enough.

The brakes are strange, but I don't think this is a symptom of the trans.

To check the trans, keep those back wheels in the air and shift to each position on the trans. 1-2-3-N-OD-D-R (whatever it is). Each position, let it roll for a minute before going to the next position. Put the rear down and check the AT fluid level.
a bad brake booster can do that or a vacuum leak around the hose connecting to it
Hello,

I think you have a bad safety shut off switch(shorting out). Some vehicle have this switch on the brake or clutch pedal. The switch is located under the drivers dash near the brake or clutch assemble.also brake switch that controls your brake lights, might be built in together 4 wire switcher or two switches connected on one pedal.Try to jump out the switch by using a jumper wire.Take the switch to a auto store and they will match it for you.

I Hope this helps Pete
