Without a more detailed description of the symptoms, a guess is about all I can offer. If you know your pads are good in front and the shoes are good in back it would have to be a problem in the hydraulic system. Your description of not working well is not very specific and leaves a lot to to the imagination. Is the pedal soft... or hard... does it pull to one side... how have you determined that the front are the ones not working? How many miles on the vehicle and how long since the hydraulic system has been checked?

Have you checked your master cylinder? Have you checked the calipers in front and the wheel cylinders in the back? Does the system need bleeding? If you're capable of doing these checks yourself that's a plus but if you're not sure... its probably best to take it to a shop.

yes you should check your rear brakes
First check the master brake cylinder. There are two sections, one for the front and one for the rear. Make sure both are full of brake fluid. When you changed the front brake pads, did you clean around the piston that pushes the pad against the rotor? Brake pad residue mixed with road grease can inhibit the piston from operating correctly. Just curious, how do you know it is just the front brakes not working well? Did you check the condition of the shoes on the rear? If they are okay, try adjusting them tighter.
who did the brake pad removal/replace? did the hydralic system get breached? you may need a professional brake bleeding done. brakes are a major safety issue. get them checked out. this is not a penny pinching auto repair.
check both really front work first then rear stops if brake pads good on front then back is bad

my wife does her own brake jobs its not that hard
yes you should check the back shoes. they might need set up a little tighter against the drums. when those self adjusters gets worn then they don,t set the shoes as good as they did when they were new.
If your front brakes %26quot;aren't working well%26quot;, and you put on new pads, I suspect your calipers may not be working properly, or the lines need bleeding.

Take the car out to a gravel road or parking lot and get going about 40mph. Hit your brakes hard enough to lock up the wheels and the take a look at your skid marks to see if all 4 wheels locked up at the same time. If not, you will know something is wrong.

Most of your braking power comes from your fron brakes, so they will wear faster than the rear, but you should check them.
check my back ones too. in fact... what did you do/ be sure the reservoir is full. if it is full and they don't work still. then you missed the problem.

lets take a look at why you replaced the pads.
for safety reasons when you do a brake job the front and rear brakes must be checked and changed if necessary.
it sounds like a hydraulic problem. its doesn't sound like your telling the whole story. need to know more info from start to end
yes have all your brakes check out...most of your braking is done in the front about 70 % and 30 % is the rear , but buy looking at all brakes you know what need to be replaced...
