Why does my car have trouble changing gears when I start it?

It's an automatic 96 Honda Accord. Right after I start my car and I want to go in reverse or put it in drive stepping on the brake and trying to pull the stick does nothing. I literally have to kick the brake for it to start working.

Just regarding the previous guy's suggestion, there are different methods to check the transmission fluid for different cars.

I believe Honda does it with Engine off and Fluid cold, not engine on and hot. But I may have this mixed up. The point is you should double check the owner's manual to be sure.

Check the transmission fluid level. it has to be on a level surface and engine running after driving a few miles
